Judy and Sue's Great Indigo Adventure – Bali

I can’t think of a better way of starting the new year than to tell you about a new trip! Join two extraordinary artists, Judy Wise and Sue Stover in their Great Indigo Adventure in Bali, September 12-20, 2015.

The Artists

Since returning from Bali  last fall, Judy has been living and dreaming everything blue. Years ago, she was a batik artist and silk dye painter. She also studied yuzen dyeing in Japan.  While in Australia at Encausticamp where she and Sue were teaching, they discussed textile art into the wee hours of the night. We now get to benefit from those discussions as they have been carving, dyeing, stitching, scrunching, poking, and waxing to make gorgeous textiles in preparation for this great adventure. You may have seen Judy’s posts on some of her work over the last couple of months. You can see some below and on her blog.

Sue also has a strong background in textiles and encaustics, with her work shown in galleries and exhibitions. I first met Sue at Encausticamp where we learned how to do discharge dyeing on silk with encaustics. Yes, it is as intriguing as it sounds. Below are some of her recent work using silk, dye, wax and thread.

This trip is going to be equally wonderful as Judy and Sue immerse in all things indigo – dyeing, batiking, shibori (a cool way of saying tie-dying), carving and making stamps. On the last day we’ll turn some of our creations into a book, basket, boutique necklace or your choice of several other gorgeous options. This is a class that will transform your relationship to paint and design.

Our Accommodations

Our intimate retreat will take place at Swasti Eco Cottages located in Nyuh Kuning, a small and quiet woodcarving village adjacent to central Ubud. We will be the only group at the center during the week of our retreat, so there will be lots of room for us to spread out as we explore different ways of dying with indigo.

Swasti is an ecological and organic hotel, emphasizing recycling throughout their facility. We will eat from their organic vegetable garden and Swasti “farm.”  It also has a full service spa, restaurant and beautiful grounds filled with flora, fauna and fish ponds, as well as a swimming pool.

The Trip costs $3,150
