Around the Square, Call for Artists
by Kathie J. Vezzani

Kirkland encaustic artist Joy Hagen is a member of Studio 103 working studio in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. She shares the studio with four other artists and they are sponsoring “Around the Square,” a call for artists that celebrate artist connections and community through the month of June. My friend, Leslie, encouraged me to give it a go, so I finished two pieces this weekend. “Lifeforce” was made with paper, a gear (a birthday gift from my friend, Angela), and pins. The second piece, “Commitment” was also made with papers, small canvases to raise the paper off of my substrate, and pins, both the heads and the bodies. Both encaustics are 12″ x 12″ cradled boards.

There will be two awards given, one by Studio 103 who will feature an artist for one month, and a People’s Choice Award which will be determined by Artwalk and Studio 103 visitors. Voting takes place June 6, 7, and ends at 5 p.m. on June 8, and later that evening at 7 p.m., the winners will be announced.

Studio 103, located at the Tashiro Kaplan Building at 306 S. Washington St.,  is open Friday through Saturday noon through 5:00 p.m., but will obviously be open for the first Thursday Artwalk June 6. So, my Seattle area friends, take time for art’s sake and visit the gallery June 6 and if you happen to see my work and like it, please vote and maybe I will see you on June 8.

These are wonderful pieces. Let us know how the voting goes. Wish I could be there to support you and your fine work.

    1. Wish you could, too, Amy. Hopefully, one or both of my pieces will make it into the show. I’ll let you know.
